When Fashion Meets Automotive Design: The Allure Of Limited-Edition Car Collaborations

In 1998, renowned British designer Sir Paul Smith collaborated with the iconic car brand Mini to create a limited-edition production run of 1,800 units of the original Mini car (Wallpaper*, n. d.). This exclusive edition featured subtle exterior and interior tweaks, making it a highly sought-after collector's item. The Mini Paul Smith Edition was only officially sold in the UK and Japan, and its value has appreciated significantly over time, surpassing that of regular Minis from the same era.

The partnership between Paul Smith and Mini was not a one-time affair. In 1999, a one-off Paul Smith Mini was created, featuring the designer's signature stripe, to commemorate 40 years since the launch of the first Mini in 1959 (Wallpaper*, n. d.). Fast-forward to 2021, when the Strip concept was unveiled, showcasing a radical reinterpretation of the Mini Cooper's interior color, materials, and finish.

This concept paved the way for the 2025 Mini Paul Smith Edition, based on the Cooper range, which was launched in Japan and will be delivered worldwide in Spring 2026, priced at $32,705.
